Learn

Center for Learning

Learning is an opportunity for discovery: discovery of the past, discovery of all that is around us, and discovery of our inner selves. At the Jewish Congregation of Venice, learning is explored in many ways. We spiritually learn through our services. We learn through meeting others from around the country and international locations. We learn through participation in adult education guest lectures or dedicated study with the Rabbi. Many of us learn through reading, sharing books from our library, and subsequent discussions. Our children learn through family activities and life cycle events. We learn about history, music, faith, and more. As we learn, we grow.

Our programs are open to all. Some special events required additional fees. Please view our Calendar to learn more about the happenings in the Center for Learning.

Adult Education

Lifelong Learning

The Jewish Congregation of Venice offers a variety of lifelong learning opportunities. Learning is captured in many ways at the JCV but one of the favorites is Adult Education, which brings many diverse speakers to the JCV. Specific Wednesdays at noon; bring your lunch, listen, and learn. Once a month on Sunday morning, join us for a hearty breakfast with special guest speakers.

Visit the Lifelong Learning page.

Family Activities

Traditions and Fun

Our Family Program for children ages 6-12 meets one Sunday each month. The group learns Hebrew, explores Jewish traditions and symbols, sings songs, discovers recipes, and more. We also study Jewish holidays and ethics. Bar and bat mitzvah preparation is offered on an individual basis.

JCV Library

Universal Jewish Study

You can visit the JCV Library whenever the building is open. You are welcome to browse and borrow books. The library is a comfortable room where JCV members can come and spend some quiet time. We have a large collection of books shelved by category.

Rabbi's Torah Study

Connection and Reflection

During weekly sessions on Thursdays from 2:00-3:00pm, the rabbi leads a lively discussion of each week’s Torah portion. Though Hebrew terms are introduced, no knowledge of Hebrew is necessary to participate in Torah study. Everyone is welcome to participate!

Scholar In Residence

Guest Speakers

The concept of learning is embedded in Jewish law and culture. Through the generosity of several congregants, the JCV is periodically able to bring special guests to intellectually enrich our community.

Tuesday Discussion

The Voice of a Woman

The JCV women’s discussion group, Kol Isha, began out of a conversation that was initiated at a JCV Women’s Retreat. The group wanted to continue the discussion, so we started meeting monthly. A wide range of topics have included preparing for death, spirituality, mothers’ favorite recipes, and women of the Bible. We meet every other Tuesday from 10:30am-12:00pm.

If you would like to join us, contact Cantor Marci at cantor@thejcv.org.
